I once met a creative who could type myriads of words in a matter of seconds without missing a single letter. He utilizes his writing dexterity to start curating content for websites without considering the principles of good content writing. Recently he shared a post about his false assumptions and how he can become better. He finally realized that just as there are bugs in computer codes to watch out for, similarly there are mistakes to watch out for when writing content for websites.

In this article, I will be discussing mistakes to avoid when writing content for websites but first, let’s look into UX writing, alternatively called web writing.

Writing Content for Websites?

Websites are regarded as the face of every organization that communicates its value propositions to the target audience. Content writers who curate content for websites are called UX writers. Hence, it is the joint effort of web developers and UX writers to respectively build interactive websites and write tailored content that demonstrates the services, mission, objectives, description, employment opportunities, and contact address of the firm or organization. Hence, a UX writer must avoid mistakes that can disrupt the content development of the website which ultimately affects the organization’s reputation.

What Are The Mistakes to Avoid When Writing Content For Websites?

Writing for websites can be tedious as you try to link each section of the web page to make an insightful read. Therefore, I have listed 5 mistakes to avoid when writing content for websites.

  1. Writing without a proper understanding of the target niche

For every conversation either virtual or physical, it is important to understand your audience to have a meaningful conversation that would yield positive results. For instance, curating content related to fashion design but the audience is people that work in the health care industry. The content idea does not target the audience because they are not a fashion-inspired set of people. Hence, the content becomes insignificant and does not yield a positive result. Understanding the audience drives traffic to a website and makes the content worthy of the audience’s attention. Writing for a fashion-related website means you’d consider using fashion keywords that can make essence to the target audience.

2. Lack of detailed research

Research is the first step in writing content for a website. It is paramount to consult different websites that show similar concepts you want to write on and look at their structure, tone of language, and delivery layout. Research is the backbone of writing. Hence, a UX writer must do proper research to record optimal performance.

3. Writing quickly without proofreading

Writing can be stressful at times because there are numerous ideas to brainstorm such as understanding the required audience, doing research, writing professional content, checking grammar usage, and so many other indicators to consider. However, a final phase people often miss is proofreading the content thoroughly again. Experts say it’s vital to leave your writing and check back the next day to read it from the perspective of the reader but sometimes, we hurry to complete the content Therefore, re-check, cross-check and check again before deploying the content on the website.

4. Digressing from the main content

Always go straight to the point when writing for a website. Going straight to the point helps your audience comprehend and get the fact from your writing. They believe you are straightforward and that way, you are building a strong connection which ultimately generates a positive lead. As a UX writer, always write with a clear purpose and clear structure.

5. Copying the content from other similar web pages

As a UX writer, plagiarism is illegal and it’s not a good trait to possess. In some countries, plagiarism is a capital offense and you might get jailed for copying other people’s intellectual content. Writing thoroughly from in-depth research gives your audience a sense of comfort with you as they know you provide original and genuine content. They are certain that you provide unique content and they haven’t seen your content in other places.
